Day 2: Saturday, May 14th

On Saturday, we didn't have a clinic, so we took the 21 little boys from the orphanage in our compound to the pool and the beach. Some of the little boys had never been outside of the village, and almost none of them had ever seen the ocean, even though it was only a 15-minute drive away! They were even excited to ride in the school bus.

We were each assigned to one child to supervise. I had a little boy name Kenzie, who was older than most of the boys and actually spoke a decent amount of French, which was fantastic because we could communicate.

The team had purchased little water wings, inflatable beach balls and water-rings for them for the dollar store in Canada, and the kids splashed around in their underwear, with their water wings, for hours.  They had never been to a pool, and didn't know how to swim, but the water was shallow and they had a blast.

Then we gave them kites (also from the dollar store) and they ran along the beach with them tirelessly. Most of the children were afraid of the ocean, and didn’t really want to go it... which was kind of a good thing, because I would have been a bit nervous supervising 21 small children who don’t know how to swim.

In the evening, we bagged rice and beans into rations for distribution the following day. Each bag of rice and beans could last an average sized family 4-6 weeks, and we made more than 500 bags of each.
